With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to North America, New York City is celebrating the tournament in a unique way. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which operates the city’s subway and bus system, has wrapped 48 subway trains to represent each of the 48 nations competing in the World Cup. Each train is wrapped with the respective country’s flag.
Naturally, Portugal is among them. The Portuguese train is running on the 4 line, traveling from Crown Heights in Brooklyn, through Manhattan, and north to Woodlawn in the Bronx. Visitors and local supporters alike can keep an eye out for the train as it makes its way across the city.
Beyond the excitement of the tournament itself, the World Cup has become a celebration of the many cultures that make New York one of the world’s most diverse cities. As New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani remarked, “When a train wrapped in the colors of Senegal pulls into Harlem, or a subway car carrying Morocco’s flag rolls through Astoria, it tells a story about who we are as New Yorkers.”
Enjoy the colorful trains before they leave next week!
