On the last weekend of May, the Portuguese training tall ship, Sagres, docked in Lower Manhattan. The Sagres was originally a German-built ship built in 1937 that was seized by the United States during World War II. The ship was then sold to Brazil in 1948 before being sold to Portugal in 1961. It has been a school ship for training sailors since Portugal acquired it.
This visit would be one of two trips to New York City. This first visit was in support of Portugal’s candidacy for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. Visitors were welcomed onboard to tour the ship and ask the crew any questions.
The second visit will take place in the first week of July, with participation in Sail 250, an event celebrating the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America, the International Naval Review (INR 250), and the training voyages of the 1st and 2nd year cadets of the Naval Academy.
